“I have been a fan of We the Living for years, but this collection of essays by Emre Gurgen has completely deepened my understanding of the novel. Gurgen doesn't just analyze the themes, but grounds them in the gritty reality of 1920's Saint Petersburg. The way he breaks down the hypocrisy of the "after hours" socialist labor and the nightmare of the people's courts made the characters struggles feel so much more visceral. The bibliography is an incredible bonus - it's going to be a permanent reference tool on my bookshelf.”

“I often struggled to visualize the day to day horrors Rand describes in We the Living, but this book provided all the historical context I was missing. Gurgen has put together a high-quality resource that does a great job of explaining the "why" behind the characters' desperate choices. The inclusion of the index and bibliography shows just how much effort went into this—a great value for students or serious readers.”

Very Compelling

Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2026

Format: Hardcover

This book gives a really solid look at what Russia was like under communist rule, driving home the failings of communism and shortcomings of collectivism. It talks about the food shortages, horrible working conditions, and just how hard life was overall back then. The descriptions are pretty vivid and the pictures display communist Russia in stark reality. The parallels with modern day events between Russia and Ukraine are striking. Definitely worth checking out if you’re interested in that kind of history.”

Scholarly Insight that Brings the Novel to Life

“This book is a must for anyone wanting to take a serious deep dive into Ayn Rand's critique of Soviet life. I found the essays on the gulag system and the destruction of the family unit particularly haunting. Gurgen does a fantastic job of highlighting how the State effectively invaded every corner of a citizen's private life - from their bank accounts to their own dining rooms. It's a dense read but the glossary of Soviet terms and he massive index making navigating the content very straightforward. A very thorough and eye-opening exploration.”

“I bought this primarily for the bibliography and the glossary, and I was not disappointed. The essays are a great added benefit, offering clear, humanized insights into the horrors of a centralized state. I love that the book explicitly tackles the psychological and societal toll of things like nationalized business and broken privacy rights. It has definitely enhanced my appreciation for the book and the sheer courage of the characters trying to survive such a crushing environment. Highly recommended for your personal library!”

“Emre Gurgen proves himself to be a meticulous independent scholar in this impressive critical study. The depth of research is extraordinary, and the annotated bibliography alone is a resource of immense value. This is more than literary criticism, it is a scholarly companion to understanding both We the Living and the historical world behind it.”

“What makes this book remarkable is how vividly it brings the human cost of collectivism to life. Gurgen doesn’t merely analyze Rand’s themes, he demonstrates, with extensive historical context and scholarship, how communist ideology translated into suffering, surveillance, scarcity, and oppression. A compelling and sobering work.”
